About the Author

Carrie Chaffin holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and a Master of Science degree in Animal Science from Louisiana State University.  Imprinting on a Cocker spaniel as a newborn, Chaffin has had a lifelong interest in animals.  After being introduced as an undergraduate to operant conditioning using positive reinforcement training, she began a decades long study into animal behavior, types of positive reinforcement, and canine cognition.

Principal investigators and authors such as Patricia McConnell, Karen Pryor, Turid Rugaas, John Pilley, and Alexandra Horowitz have made an impact on Chaffin and continue to inspire learning.  Working as a veterinary technician and later as an ophthalmic photographer, Chaffin’s professional career has centered around medical science.

Chaffin has dedicated much of her lifetime to riding the sport of dressage and has earned her United States Dressage Federation bronze and silver medals.  Chaffin lives with her beloved spaniel Rosco and two Border collies, Gunner and Jackie, who continue to educate her about the mind of a dog. Chaffin also lives with another Homo sapiens treasured enough to share a mutual name.
